Welcome! 10 Front Door Set-ups That Work

1. Red Door

The fire engine red front door will always be number one. It’s eye catching against your front yard greenery, against your door molding, and against almost any exterior home color. Put simply, you cannot go wrong with this set-up. You pretty much don’t need anything else, so it’s your cheapest, easiest option to add tons of curb appeal.

2. Big Urns

This one is sorta self-explanatory. Big urns, at least a pair of them, but three’s the charm. Try graduated sizes: small, medium, and large. And within each pot, try pairing an upstanding sculptural plant like snake plant, with a cascading piece like trailing sedum for visual balance and interest.

3.Frame It Out

Got a front door that’s door-sized? You might want more. If you can architecturally frame out a bit more space, you can add accent windows on all three sides that make a huge statement. More transparency opens up your home’s facade to your guests. And they come in every possible design from hip icy modern rectangles to etched patterns in intricate detail.

4. Barn Lighting

If you want your front door to seem like it was just styled to sell, put up a pair of gooseneck barn light sconces on either side. Bonus? Paint the door between them red. (See #1) They come in black, white, chrome, copper, and literally every other color.

5. Pendant Lamp

An oversized hanging pendant lamp is cool. It gives your entry lots of personality. And also, lots of light. The brighter your front entry display, the more inviting to nighttime guests. And also, the more uninviting to nerdowells.

6. Monochrome-ness

If you’ve got a yellow door, try a pot of yellow chrysanthemums. Matchy-matchy can be kosher kosher.

7. Entry Sconce(s)

You can go for the barn lighting above (see #4) but here’s the thing, try a little asymmetry. One lamp or a pair of two. Either way, there are tons of sconce designs, from vintage caged lantern to mid-century modern.

8. Center Knob

This one is not just for Hobbit fans. It’ll give your neighbors something to talk about it. Like “why didn’t I think of that?”

9. The Craftsman Gable

These have showed up across the country on all sorts of architectural styles, but if you already live in California, you happen to have an edge. And it’s not as hard as it seems to add one to your front entry. It’s a wow factor with a nod to architectural history.

10. Funky Grasses

These actually work in almost any climate, and they look fabulous. Feathery grasses, as neat and curt or as tall and flowing as you like, instantly modernize an entry. Emanating from sleek pots, they’ll add more style than you think. Before you know it, decorative grasses will be popping up all over your exterior decor.
